Political Cartoon Analysis Table

Examine the images:

Examine the captions and other words:

Step One:

1. List the objects or people you see in the cartoon.

A. Identify the cartoon caption and/or title.

 

B. Locate three words or phrases used by the cartoonist to identify objects or people within the cartoon. (Note: Some cartoons do not have written clues.)

 

C. Record any important dates or numbers that appear in the cartoon.

 

Step Two:

2. Which of the objects on your list are symbols?

D. Which words or phrases in the cartoon appear to be the most significant? Why do you think so?

 

E. List adjectives that describe the emotions portrayed in the cartoon.

Step Three: Examine the images and words together:

  • Describe the action taking place in the cartoon.

 

  • Explain how the words in the cartoon helped you clarify the meaning of the cartoon and symbols.

 

  • Write one sentence explaining what you think the message of the cartoon is.

 

 

  • What special interest groups would agree or disagree with the cartoon's message? Why?
